Argentina v UK

For the past 30 years, Argentina and the UK have been fighting over the Falkland islands. Things escalated this past week when Prime Minister David Cameron referred to the Argentinians as "colonialists." The legislators and citizens of Argentina are up in arms about the comment, claiming that the UK is breaking a UN resolution by developing the islands unilaterally when there is dispute over the area. The UK says they will let the Falklands be British as long as they wish, but Argentina says they want to work towards independence. The UK is drilling in the oil-rich sea beds of the Falklands. Argentina issued a statement instructing them not to exploit the resources of the area until ownership has been settled. We will still have to see if the UK will follow these instructions. I doubt they will, considering their powerful status in the world. Both sides want to work out the issues diplomatically, but they have been working to that end for nearly 30 years. What do you think will happen with the Falklands? What is the best way to resolve the situation?

  1. It is obvious why UK has invested so much interest in the area. I also doubt that they will cease drilling. While a good agreement has still not been made, I believe another war is unnecessary and compromise should be reached through diplomacy. I am not extremely knowledgeable of the Falkland Islands, so I would like to know why they aren't granted independence from Argentina and the UK, and whether or not the Falklanders want to be independent.

#1) Prince William is in the Falkland Islands. <3
#2) Apparently that is really pissing off the president of Argentina
#3) I don't know what is wrong with her, because Prince William is wonderful even though he is starting to bald.

Otherwise, I'm with Ravi, I totes don't know anything about these islands, so I'll read some articles.

BUT..considering how powerful the UK is, I don't think their going to just pick up and leave the islands while trying to reach a compromise. But I don't really see a compromise coming easily. Argentina wants to make a complaint about the UK to the UN due to the UK's "militarism." Also, Argentina has threatened to invade the islands and in response, the UK sent Prince William and a task force.

This doesn't seem like the best way to resolve the situation at all.

Its hard to understand why Argentina and the UK fight each other even if people think its easy. They fought a war in 1982 that resulted in them with 649 killed 1,068 wounded, 11,313 taken prisoner. While Britain had 775 wounded, 115 taken prisoner and 258 killed. Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin supplied Argentina with weapons because he was strongly anti-British and would do whatever he could to strike at them. Both of them underestimated Britain's military might because they thought since they were 8,000 miles away it was impossible for them to put up a good defense for the islands. Just because you are far away doesn't mean you cant strike for example when the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine – External Operations
took the Israelis hostage and flew to Uganda they assumed they couldnt fly that far out but yet again they work in great faith so it doesnt matter if your far away you can still strike at someone no matter where they are. The UK say the people want to stay British and the Argentinas think they want freedom but opinions differ but nothing big would happen unless the President decides to retake the islands again but i doubt they would risk being destroyed again i mean both countries have Special Forces but Argentina Special forces are as good as the Egyptian Special forces unit 777. The German KSK and Israeli Special Forces and US Army Delta Force and the Australian and New Zealand Special Air Service are created like them they are the best in the world and any war with Argentina would result in the British SAS winning the fight. I dont think anything big will happen unless they become crazy.

  4. Like Ravi said, they will probably continue to drill and won't easily give up the region. The UK is going back a bit to their former colonizing ways. But I think once an intermediary group like the UN intervenes, they will probably help Argentina claim the Falkland Islands.
